Lawyers: Najwa Tarzi Karzai

Najwa was born in Kabul, Afghanistan. At eight years of age, and after bearing witness to the atrocities of war, she left Afghanistan with her family and lived in India and Germany for a few years before immigrating to the U.S. in the early 1980’s.
She moved to Southern California and attended the University of California, Irvine, where she graduated in 1994 with a double major – a B.A. in Political Science and a B.S. in Biological Sciences – all the while holding a full-time job. Thereafter, she went to Western State University School of Law and earned her J.D. with Honors in 1999. While in law school, she was the recipient of the American Jurisprudence Award in legal writing and was a Merit Scholar for all three years (again, holding a full-time job).
Her work experience has focused on insurance coverage issues on behalf of policyholders, and she is familiar with employment and labor law issues. She is also a licensed real estate broker and familiar with real estate issues.
Najwa comes from and also married into a prominent Afghan family. She is active in the Afghan community, well traveled, enjoys spending time with her family, debating political issues and reading political biographies. She is fluent in Farsi and Pashto, and can get by in German.
